Dragon Roll Recipe

The Dragon Roll is a visually striking and flavorful sushi roll that is often a crowd favorite in many sushi restaurants. Known for its impressive presentation, the Dragon Roll typically features eel (unagi) as its central ingredient, combined with sushi rice, nori (seaweed), and various vegetables. The roll is named after the mythical dragon due to its appearance, which is often decorated with thin slices of avocado arranged to resemble dragon scales. The deep, rich flavor of the eel paired with the creamy texture of avocado and the crunch of vegetables creates a deliciously harmonious combination. A drizzle of sweet eel sauce (unagi sauce) adds the perfect finishing touch, making it an unforgettable sushi experience.

The Dragon Roll is not just about taste but also about presentation. Its vibrant colors and the artistic arrangement of ingredients make it a favorite for special occasions. While eel is the traditional filling, some variations of the Dragon Roll may use other proteins like shrimp tempura or spicy tuna, allowing for customization based on personal preferences. This roll showcases the creativity and craftsmanship that sushi chefs often bring to their work, and it has become a staple on many sushi menus for its unique balance of flavors and eye-catching appeal.

Dragon Roll Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • 2 ½ cups water
  • ¼ cup rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 4 sheets of nori (seaweed)
  • 4-6 oz eel (unagi), grilled or cooked
  • 1 ripe avocado, thinly sliced
  • ½ cucumber, julienned
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional)
  • Eel sauce (unagi sauce) for drizzling
  • Soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi for serving

For Spicy Mayo:

  • 3 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp sriracha sauce
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Instructions:

1.   Prepare Sushi Rice:

o   Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Cook the rice according to the instructions on the package, using a rice cooker or stovetop.

o   Once cooked, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl until dissolved. Gently fold the vinegar mixture into the warm rice and let it cool to room temperature.

2.   Make Spicy Mayo:

o   In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, sriracha, and lemon juice until smooth. Set aside for later use.

3.   Prepare Eel:

o   If you're using cooked eel, ensure it is grilled or broiled and cut into strips. The eel should be tender and flavorful, with a slightly smoky taste. You can buy pre-cooked eel from many grocery stores or specialty markets.

4.   Assemble the Dragon Roll:

o   Lay a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface and place a sheet of nori, shiny side down.

o   Spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving about 1 inch of space at the top.

o   Place a few pieces of cucumber and a strip of eel in the center of the rice.

o   Carefully roll the sushi using the bamboo mat, making sure it's tight but not too tight to crush the ingredients.

o   Once the roll is formed, gently place the roll on a cutting board.

5.   Top the Roll:

o   Arrange thin slices of avocado on top of the roll to resemble dragon scales. You can fan the slices out for a more dramatic effect.

o   Drizzle the roll with eel sauce and a little bit of spicy mayo if desired.

6.   Slice and Serve:

o   Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into bite-sized pieces.

o   Garnish with sesame seeds (optional) and serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi.

Enjoy your Dragon Roll, a perfect blend of rich flavors and artistic presentation!
